Growing Up in the
Eastern Cape

I was born and raised in the Eastern Cape and, as a child, was fortunate to travel frequently to remote farms with my parents.

The photograph (circa 1915) is of my paternal grandparents, Max and Lily Parkin. Max and Lily spent the early years of their marriage living in huts, while Max, a land surveyor, surveyed large tracts of the Transkei and Eastern Cape.

I attended Clarendon High School for Girls in East London, as did my mother (when the school was called ‘Girl’s High’) and my sister. Despite living in Johannesburg for many years, I still believe myself to be an Eastern Cape person at heart.
